Scottish Castle Types
There are many different types of castles. This section defines them.

Achadun Castle
Location: The ruins of Achadun Castle are located on the southwest coastline of the Isle of Lismore 4 miles west of Lismore Cathedral.

Ardbrecknish House
Location: On the shore of Loch Awe stands the azalea-surrounded Ardbrecknish House (“Rockhill” in English) on an estate that long ago belonged to MacDougalls.

Ardchattan Priory
Location: On the north shore of Loch Etive.

Ardencaple House
Location: On an estate on the northern shoreline of the island of Seil, a mile (1.5 km.) west of Clachan Bridge and 7 miles (11 km.) southwest of Oban. 

Ardfad Castle
Location: Found upon a rocky ridge on the north shore of the Isle of Seil in Netherlorn.

Ardlarach House
Location: situated on the west shore of the Island of Luing, on Black Mill Bay, and can be reached by the road that runs west from Kilchattan. It is privately owned.

Ardmaddy Castle
Location: Now part of a mansion located 2 miles (3 km) N of Loch Melford and 12 miles (18 km) SSW of Oban in Kilbrandon parish in Netherlorn, Argyllshire. 

Aros Castle
Location: On a high promontory about 1 1/4 miles (2 km) NW of the 19th C. village of Salen on the north east coast of the Isle of Mull.

Balmaodan Priory & Balmaodan Church
Location: On the north shore of Loch Etive, partway up the hill.

Cairnburgh Castle
Location: At the northern end of the chain of Treshnish Isles on two small islands 3 miles (5 km) SW of Treshnish Point on Mull and 12½ miles (20 km) N of Iona.

Caisteal nan Con
Location: On the NE shore of the mile long (1.6 km) fertile island of Torsay between Luing and the mainland. 

Coeffin Castle
Location: A Hall House which entirely covers its perch on a coastal promontory on the NW shore of Lismore looking westward out over the Lyn of Morvern.

Dun Chonnell Castle
Location: Situated on two peaks on the island of Dun Chonnuill.  The island of Dun Chonnuill lies at the NE end of the high-clifted four island Garvellachs chain which lies in a line west of Lunga about midway between Jura and Mull.
